Last Friday, Jon and I, and about 50 more riders biked around Manhattan for a couple of hours. The event was called Critical Mass. It was definitely an exhilarating experience. I felt like I was in a protest rally on wheels. I felt empowered by my fellow riders. I felt I owned the city. I felt powerful... that's until a cop in Times Sq. tried to dismount a biker from his bike to arrest him in the middle of the street! I'm not sure if he actually got arrested since we bolted as soon as we saw what was happening. Honestly, I didn't feel bad for the guy. I wouldn't even feel bad if it was me who got arrested. Although it was an exciting ride, it totally defeats its own purpose. This is supposed to promote bicycling in the city but the group kept on breaking all traffic rules, from beating red lights to outright stopping traffic so the whole gang can pass. They shouldn't call it Critical Mass. They should call it Hypocritical Mass instead.
